Fans at the Canmore Recreation Centre were treated to an exciting two games this weekend, as the Canmore Eagles won the 2nd game of their doubleheader with the Camrose Kodiaks 4-2 to sweep. The back-to-back wins allow the Eagles to move into a tie for 2nd Place in the AJHL South division with the Drumheller Dragons with a record of 7 wins, 2 losses, and 2 overtime losses. The team’s best start since the 2002-03 season.
It was the Young brothers who led the charge, with Alex recording a hat trick (8, 9 & 10), while his older brother Colton assisted on all 3 goals. Colton, this year’s team Captain was back in the lineup on Friday night after missing 3 games.
“Colton and Alex have obviously great chemistry and they were both outstanding tonight,” said Eagles Head Coach and General Manager Andrew Milne.
Michael Spafford scored the other goal (3). The 18-year-old rookie from Saskatoon had a great weekend as he also found the twine twice on Friday night.
Defenceman Mark Drohan had a pair of assists and with 18 points on the season, he is tied for 2nd in the AJHL scoring race which is pretty impressive for a Defenceman!
Logan Dyck got the start between the pipes for the 2nd straight night and he was solid, as he stopped 29 of the 31 shots he faced to improve his record to 4 wins and 2 losses. The shots were 31 apiece.
Saturday's game saw the two teams trading goals in the first two periods before the Eagles were able to pull away with two goals in the 3rd period. "I think Kodiaks’ netminder Griffin Bowerman played really well and was the reason why the game was a low-scoring one compared to the first game," said Milne.
Next up for the Eagles is a trip to Okotoks to take on the Oilers (5-5-1) on Tuesday, October 16. Revenge will certainly be on the menu for the Eagles, as the Oilers spoiled the Eagles’ home opener on Friday, October 5 with 7-6 Overtime win.
After Tuesday's game on the road, the Eagles will get to enjoy a couple of days of rest, before they return on home ice to face the Bonnyville Pontiacs (9-2) on Sunday, October 21 at 2:30 pm.
